What actually happens when we clean your rug

First we identify the fiber and the construction. Hand-knotted wool behaves nothing like a machine-made olefin rug. Then we test dyes for bleed with a damp white towel, corner by corner. Reds and indigos in older wool pieces move first. Next comes dry soil removal, before any water touches it. Dry grit is beaten and vacuumed out from the back. That step matters here because decomposed granite and dry silt sink to the foundation of the pile and cut the wool from below.

Only then does washing start. We pre-condition, then agitate gently. Then we rinse. Valley hard water leaves mineral and detergent residue if the rinse is not pH-buffered, so we correct for it. Residue is why a rug re-soils fast after a bad cleaning.

Drying is controlled and flat, with airflow. Wool held wet too long smells like wet wool for weeks.

Urine is different work. On area rugs over hardwood the urine sits in the foundation and often marks the floor beneath. Surface cleaning does nothing. Those rugs need full submersion or repeated flush and extraction off-site.
